I am a big proponent that games should do more than provide us with spectacle and fantasy to take us out of our dreary lives. They should serve to fill the need that mythical story telling has since the inception of culture. To provide characters we aspire to be and reinforce our sense of wonder at the both the possibilities of imagination and the world itself. In response to a Dtoid article about “RPGs are Broken” I find myself upset at the focus on aesthetics, game play, fantasy archetypes and and all that story/character development that people claim are the root of rpgs. In fact I find the fault with the very way games are developed, and with the fact that games designed to sell millions of copies are radically different than those that are developed by the ingenuity and creativity of a small band of dedicated people.
